Solar Energy Support Structures

West Coast Iron, Inc. and its solar structure team have been deploying design/build and bid/build solar projects since 2007. We have completed over 50 projects, providing the steel supporting systems for well over 20 MegaWatts of solar. Most of our projects are “Parking Lot Elevated Arrays” or Solar Carport Structures, however, WCI has also provided tens of thousands of “H Piles” for large scale ground mount systems, including tracking solar. We are also specialists in rooftop systems that need to be elevated above rooftop components, such as mechanical equipment.

WCI’s advanced 3D modeling capabilities and our state-of-the-art CNC fabrication lines make us one of the few “go to” companies for large solar projects.

In 2011, WCI designed and received its own Division of the State Architect ( California DSA ), Pre-Check ( PC# ) Documents for Solar Carport Structures. Many of our projects, over the past 2 years, have been on K-12 school campuses and Community Colleges, with WCI and its Engineering Partner acting as the Professional of Record for the entire project.

In 2013, WCI developed its proprietary “Ground Assemble / Crane Lift” system for carport solar. Using elevated work stands, up to 50kW (30 tons) of carport canopy at a time can be assembled at ground level, including PV module installation and 90% of the DC wiring and lighting. WCI’s team then crane hoists entire assembled canopies. Electrical trade man-hours are significantly reduced utilizing this system. Please see this video:
